Biography
Mauro Martino is a Principal Research Scientist and Manager at the MIT-IBM Watson AI Lab, where he founded and directs the Visual Artificial Intelligence Lab. His research focuses on developing new methods to experience data, integrating artificial intelligence to enhance information analysis, and creating transparent, intuitive machine learning models. Martino's work bridges scientific rigor with artistic creativity, transforming complex information into accessible visual narratives.[1]
A pioneer in AI Art and Data Art since 2008, Martino's projects explore the intersection of AI, data visualization, and human perception. Notable works include AI Portraits (2018/2019), which became a viral generative AI web experience with over 8 million users per day, and Forma Fluens (2017), an analysis of 2.5 billion drawings revealing cultural patterns. His recent work, Atomic Reverberations (2025), comprises bronze sculptures that materialize AI concepts, permanently installed at the MIT campus. He also led the "Mapping the NFT Revolution" project, an extensive data-driven exploration of the NFT market.[3]
Martino holds a PhD in Design and Technologies from the Polytechnic of Milan, where his doctoral research involved the MIT SENSEable City Lab. He is also a Professor of Practice at Northeastern University. His contributions to the field are documented in over 40 scientific publications across journals such as "Nature", "Science", and "PNAS", and he holds several patents.[3]
