Biography

Rettore Vincenzo Loia currently serves as the Rector of the University of Salerno, a position he has held since November 2019. His academic foundation was established with a Laurea in Scienze dell’Informazione from the University of Salerno in 1985, followed by a PhD in Computer Science from the Université Pierre & Marie Curie Paris VI in France in 1989. Professor Loia's career at the University of Salerno spans several decades, beginning as a researcher from 1989 to 2000, then advancing to associate professor from 2000 to 2004, before becoming a Full Professor of Computer Science.[1] Throughout his tenure, he has held various institutional leadership roles, including Director of the Department of Mathematics and Computer Science, the Department of Computer Science, and the Department of Business Sciences - Management & Innovation Systems (DISA-MIS).[1] His research interests are centered on innovative approaches to complex problem-solving, encompassing agent and multi-agent systems, approximate reasoning utilizing Description Logic and Fuzzy Logic, and methodologies for knowledge extraction from unstructured data.[1] Professor Loia has also focused on decision support systems driven by artificial intelligence models, cognitive architectures, computational intelligence, and granular computing. This work has found application across diverse fields, from medicine and law to cyber-intelligence.[1] A prolific author, Professor Loia has contributed to approximately 350 scientific papers published in international conferences, book chapters, and journals, reflected in an H-index of 36.[1] He is the Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Ambient Intelligence and Humanized Computing and Evolutionary Intelligence, and co-editor-in-chief of Soft Computing, in addition to serving as an editor for 14 other international journals.[1] Since 2018, he has been the Scientific Director of the Multidisciplinary Observatory for the Fight Against Organised Crime and Terrorism, a collaborative initiative between the University of Salerno and the Direzione Nazionale Antimafia e Antiterrorismo (DNA).[2][1]
