Gianclaudio Malgieri

Dr. Gianclaudio Malgieri is a Full Professor of Law, Artificial Intelligence, Data Governance, and Fundamental Rights at Maastricht University. He was previously an Associate Professor of Law and Technology at Leiden University, where he conducted his research at eLaw – Center for Law and Digital Technologies and is a member of its board of directors. His academic work focuses on digital rights, digital vulnerability, digital well-being, data protection law, privacy, AI regulation, and AI explainability rights, as well as consumer protection in the digital market. He also serves as Honorary Director of the Brussels Privacy Hub at Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and as Managing Editor of the journal "Computer Law and Security Review". He is recognized as an external ethics expert for the European Commission and a member of the Advisory Board of EPIC.org and CAIDP. His profound knowledge of the ethical and legal implications of AI makes him a central figure in the debate on technological governance, aligning with the themes of the Human Driven AI Summit 2026. Malgieri is the author of over 100 publications, including the volume "Vulnerability and Data Protection Law" (Oxford University Press, 2023). He is co-rapporteur for the "Principles for the Governance of Biometrics", a joint project of the American Law Institute and the European Law Institute. His research has been cited by international media outlets such as The New York Times, Le Monde, Il Sole 24 Ore, la Repubblica, and Il Corriere della Sera, as well as by institutions like the European Commission and the World Economic Forum. Among his research projects, he directs the RESOCIAL Project, funded by NWO and ZonMw, focusing on vulnerability and resilience in social media, and coordinates VULNERA, the International Observatory on Vulnerability in Data Protection. In 2024, he received the AI Policy Leader Award (academic section), in recognition of his impact in the field of AI policy. He holds a PhD in Law from the Law, Science, Technology and Society (LSTS) Research Centre at Vrije Universiteit Brussel, preceded by an LLM and a JD with honors from the University of Pisa and the Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna di Pisa.
