Gianclaudio Malgieri

Associate Professor of Law and Technology at Leiden University

Biography

Gianclaudio Malgieri is an Associate Professor of Law & Technology at Leiden University, where he is a Board Member at eLaw – Center for Law and Digital Technologies. His research and teaching focus on the intersection of law and digital advancements, encompassing data protection, privacy, and the regulation of artificial intelligence. Dr. Malgieri's work specifically addresses fundamental rights in the digital sphere, digital vulnerability, and consumer protection in the digital market. Beyond his role at Leiden, Dr. Malgieri serves as the Co-Director of the Brussels Privacy Hub and is an Affiliated Researcher at the LSTS centre of Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and the Augmented Law Institute of the EDHEC Business School.[1] He is also a Managing Editor of Computer Law and Security Review and coordinates “VULNERA,” the International Observatory of Vulnerability in Data Protection. His expertise is recognized through his position as an External Ethics Expert of the European Commission, contributing to the ethical assessment of EU research proposals. Dr. Malgieri is a prolific author, with over 100 publications to his name, including articles in leading international academic journals.[1] His monograph, "Vulnerability and Data Protection Law," was published by Oxford University Press in 2023.[2] His research delves into areas such as AI regulation, AI explainability rights, automated decision-making, and the protection of vulnerable individuals in data processing.[1] He is also the Project Leader of RESOCIAL, a research initiative funded by the Dutch Research Agenda on vulnerability and resilience on social media. His contributions to the field have earned him several accolades, including the "Policy Leader in AI Award" delivered by CAIPD.Europe in 2024.[1] In 2023, he received the 35under35 award for digital policy leadership from CIDOB and Banco Santander, and in 2020, he was awarded the FPF Privacy for Policymaker Paper Award.[1] Dr. Malgieri holds a PhD in Law from the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, an LLM from the University of Pisa, and a JD from the Sant'Anna School of Advanced Studies of Pisa.[1]
